Gruesome Knitted Eyeballs for Halloween

At our house we like to offer these on a plate. I offer you a free pattern!

KNITTED EYEBALL

What you will need:

Fingering weight yarn: 1.5yds(1.4m) meters black, 1.5yds(1.4m) iris color, 2yds (1.8m) white (I used Rauma Finnullgarn)
1 set dp needles size 3.0 (2USA)
crewel embroidery needle
Wool fleece or other stuffing

Knitted Eyeball

With black Cast On 6 stitches.
Rnd 1 Slide sts to other end of needle and knit into the first st cast on as for I cord। k to end.

Separate stitches onto 3 needles (2st on each)

Rnd 2 *k1, increase1, k1; repeat from * (9 sts)
Rnd 3 with iris color k
Rdn 4 * k1, inc 1, k1, inc1, k1; repeat from * (15 sts)
Rnd 5 knit
Rnd 6 with white k
Rnd 7 on each needle, *k1 inc1; end k1 (27 sts)
Rnd 8-10 k

Now is a good time to weave in all the pesky ends you have thus far, turn eyeball inside out while still on needles, for easy access.

Rnd 11 *k1, k2 tog, k1,k2tog, k1; repeat from * 18 sts
Rnd 12 & 13 k
Rnd 14 *k1, k2tog; repeat from *(12 sts)
Rnd 15 k
Rnd 16 k2 tog around.

Break off yarn, thread thru loops, before tying off stuff with fleece, poking it in with a spare needle, fluffing to achieve a lovely spherical eyeball shape. Pull tail-end tight and weave in end.

You might add a few red threads for some ghoulish veiny appeal.

If you would like a visual aid, please visit my Knitted Olive Tutorial. It is made much the same way.

As it turns out there are quite a few knitted eyeballs rolling around the planet:
insubordiknit has beautiful multiple felted ones nestled in a mass of bloody guts, softly felted bloody guts.
kitkatknit has a beautiful shot of knit-art "sushi with eyeballs" scrumtious!
domiknitrix has a great all-purpose Large (22") eyeball with a downlaodable pattern.
Knitzelmade a nice one for a Doctor's office, with correctly placed muscles!
Shari suggested filling them with catnip, for catnip eyeballs! Brilliant!
BlondeAmbitionKnits has a nice veiny one.
Please comment if you eyeball any more!

I want some! Does that justify going out and buying more yarn?

Thanks for all the nice comments! I strung a few eyeballs on a quick knitted headband, for a Knitted Eyeball Tiara. Spooktacular for the un-costumey costume!

These are just so fun. I, of course, would add a few bloodshot veins with embroidery. Happy Halloween!

Oh man! Those are great, and make me feel less weird (http://knitzel.blogspot.com/2007/06/eyes-on-prize.html) A friend emailed me a link to your blog, and now I see there are plenty of eyeball knittin' sisters out there. Nice job!

I love this pattern. I have been knitting eyeballs for days now. I did find some errors in the instructions however.

I believe Rnd 4 should be: inc 1, K1, inc1 on each needle. This makes 15 stitches around.

Rnd 7 ends with 21 stitches, not 27

Rnd 11 should be K1, K2tog, K4 on each needle.

Please let me know if I am wrong and I am the one reading your pattern wrong.

thanks so much. Everyone is loving the eyeballs I'm knitting.

thanks jammy dodger, I guess I better knit me an eyeball when I get home. I thought I'd been a good tech editor, but perhaps not!

Hello!
Made a pair 2 weeks ago for my friend's cats. I added an i-cord as optic nerves, and they've been a huge success.
I just adore this pattern. :)
