Oh, sharp eyes you! The applique with Vikings on my blog is part of a large group of such "tiles". The can be found in the National Museum in Torshavn, Faroe Islands.
Thanks Kristin, everybody run over to her blog and see the "tile". and I suppose it could be smocking on the little girls smock...but I'm still imagining fair isle, it looks fuzzy from my viewing distance, and yes, winged hats!

It could be embroidery... but we will say fair isle!! What in the world are those funny hats they're wearing?
