Bully for Bauhaus

I am pleased and proud to have my Bauhaus Fair Isle sweater included in the Spring '07 Interweave Knits magazine. I love fair isle knitting , it is my very favorite thing to do. I realize that many people regard fair isle knitting as quaint and old fashioned, which is one of the reasons that I like it. However when I was dreaming up this sweater I wanted folks to remember that at one time it was on the cutting edge of alter-fashion worn by the hippest art students in the world! While browsing our well worn copy of Bauhaus I found many pictures of the students wearing fair isle and other stranded knitting. So take a peek and delight in the unexpected!

I love that sweater -- the colors! Lately, I've been thinking about how to wear Fair Isle and tweeds with a hint of irony.

I saw a picture of Elvis Perkins wearing an old fair isle vest and making it look kinda cool, or maybe its just me!

Hi thanks for visiting my blog, and lovely to discover yours too.

My mother wore fair isle all the time as a child - she lived in Scotland and my Grandmother knitted and knitted...Arans were a favourite too. I could never get into it - well I can cast on but casting off is another story.

I love that teacosy from your last post too... so cute.

will come back soon.
Best wishes Ginny.

I love that sweater. I think I'm going to need a fair isle tutorial.

twinkle pink, thanks for the lovely story about your mom and grandma! No one in my family knit. I love hearing knitting stories as much as I love old pictures of people knitting or wearing fair isle garments!
And Petula, come on over (all 7.5 Hrs of driving) and I'll give you a LIVE tutorial. Or you can help snap pics for a slide-show version. K?

Congratulations on your published pattern! I think Fair Isle is very cool. In fact, it should become the next fad, don't you think? I am in the midst of my first fair isle project -- a very simple one with bulky yarn -- but it is soooo fun. It's easy and the results look so impressive. Maybe when I'm done I'll try to tackle something more challenging... yours looks beautiful, and my hubby is still waiting for a sweater......

Cheers,

Thanks Jen, I'm with you fair isle should be the next fad!. I is so much fun to do. I'm always singing little songs for the pattern repeats...green, green, eat a bean....blue too..blue too! I'll admit when I read the patterns, even my own, the steeking part makes my head swim...but if you just, do it, its really fun and you feel kind of daring!

Well mine doesn't include steeking. I'll put that challenge off for another year. But someday! I don't sew (yet), don't have a sewing machine (yet), so steeking feels very much beyond me at this point. :)
